What training options do I have?
In order to make good training decisions, you need to know what choices
you have. You want to ensure that you're buying the right training - selecting
the right solution - to satisfy your performance requirements. When it
comes to training options, one size does not fit all. Spend your money
wisely.
This briefing sheet summarizes the primary training options that are
most likely available to you. The Certification
and Training Group can help you explore these options and select one
or several options to suit your organizational needs.

option?
Training Options
On-the-Job Training (OJT) - an
experienced employee trains a novice employee within the actual work environment.
With structure and planning, proper procedures and best practices are imparted
to the trainee by the more experienced employee.
Self-Study Training - an employee
"self-trains" in a topic or skill, typically utilizing technical materials
and/or supplemental training materials.
Vendor Training - an outside/external
training provider is used to satisfy internal training requirements. Within
our environment this training is often performed by a commercial hardware
or software provider.
Computer-Based Training (CBT)
-
training takes place via interaction with a computer program. This computer
program is carefully and specifically designed to help a trainee achieve
certain knowledge or skills and typically incorporates multiple media (multimedia)
elements.
Instructor-Based Training - a
person, usually a professional trainer and/or subject matter expert, delivers
training person-to- person or person-to-group. This training, typically
in a classroom- or lecture-style setting, may be formal or informal. Instructor-
based training is also referred to as stand-up instruction, classroom instruction,
or platform instruction.
Please Remember that...
... training options - all training options - are investments.
All training options, including OJT and self-study, have associated costs.
... training options are often deployed in combinations. For
instance, an OJT program might be paired with computer-based training tools.
Don't restrict yourself to only one approach. |
