Training & Certification

What is a Training Plan?
A Training Plan is a plan
that describes how specific
training needs will be satisfied.

You plan plenty of other things for your organization - do you plan your training?

A Training Plan defines overall training needs, objectives, and requirements. The Training Plan also delivers what the name promises - a plan for how the needed training shall be accomplished. As mentioned in Snake Nests in Training, you can't just say, "We need training," and then jump directly into it. There are too many important steps in the middle of the process that you can't skip if you expect training to meet your needs.

Training Plans are particularly critical for big training efforts. New system deliveries (hardware or software) virtually always have training needs associated with them and should include a Training Plan.

A Training Plan typically contains the following elements:
- Description of the project that is driving the training needs
- Key participants (training-related roles and responsibilities)
- Project training approach (high-level summary)
- Performance goals for the training (high-level summary)
- Description of the target population (personnel to be trained)
- Certification requirements (if applicable)
- Constraints, tradeoffs, and special factors to be considered
- Major training areas (applicable subsystems or subcomponents)
- Specific plans (for each major training area):

Training objectives
Training option(s) selected (describe)
Prerequisite knowledge/skill required (if applicable)
Resources required (time, personnel, facilities, equipment, etc.)
Schedule (when and where training will occur)
 - Master schedule (showing all training associated with the project)
